Trend brief

This trend shows how our own difficulties along with the anniversary of WW1 influences a colour pallet of more neutral tones of greys and browns but with the promised hope of a brighter future we see metallic colours coming through with a subtle but striking effect.
The materials are more raw- such as woods, stone and old metal. Fabrics will be a lot tougher
Prints will be a much softer element in this trend; worn mis-prints as though eaten away over time, light floral or vine-work, like damask patterns of old.
Handmade, restoration and DIY are also aspects within this trend making a simple homemade creation a unique bespoke design piece in the world of urban living.

Trend brief

Here's my first idea of what my trend is about; now I just need to shorten it down into a synopsis...

Everywhere you look these days there’s always some advent or another telling you of great ways to save or make money, in the news- headlines of debt crisis and how we are now at last finally out of the never ending recession. But is this true? Are the roads ahead clear or have we still got some rough terrain to travel first?
August 2014 welcomes the 100th anniversary of the First World War; looking at a crucial point in the worlds history not only for the soldiers in battle but at the ordinary people back home working to keep the nation afloat.
This trend is inspired by some of the comparisons between now and then in terms of spending less and using what you’ve got to save up for a better tomorrow.
During this time Britain had to ration its resources in order to fund the war; investing in the country’s future on grounds of victory ahead. This meant that people didn’t have much in terms of money for lavish items as what little they had went on food and necessities for survival, fabrics for clothes and furnishing were also out of the question and so the phrase ‘Make Do & Mend’ was born. People had just about enough money to cover threads and nails, so would use them to fix up worn clothing and furniture; the same with any repairs needed to a house- wood and other found materials from old sheds etc would do.
It’s with this phrase in mind that this trend is envisioned; though we are by no means in such a dire event as war, we are in a similar situation of having less funds than normal to spend how we wish and even though we are supposedly out of a recession there is always a possibility that we may fall back into one. At this time our hopes are that it is over and we can start to look ahead to a brighter future with less money worries but the cautious amongst us know we are not there yet and the saving and reduce spending needs to continue for a little while longer- but why not make the best of it? Just because we’ve been in a recession doesn’t mean we’re at rock bottom; let us do as our ancestors did in times of similar crisis but let us do it in style- old is the new chic, handmade is back with attitude and vintage is yesterdays’ style of tomorrow.

Recession over? Really?

http://occupynewsnetwork.co.uk/recessionover-really/

*Nobody's sure whether this is true or whether the goverment just really want to believe it is. They say its over but we might be back in it, others say we're not quite out off it but nearly there. People are saying we're out of it due to the massive events of 2012 with the Jubilee & Olympics- is there anything as big in 2013 to push us futher from recession or if theres nothing like 2012 will we fall back into it?- There's definately a lot of uncertainty. Recession Issues

Economic crisis isn't over yet. This may not even be the beginning of the end

Statistically, the UK is out of recession – but it took an Olympian effort to achieve even this fragile upturn

'The economy emerged from recession – but not from crisis – thanks to several one-off factors such as the Olympics and Paralympics.'
'Make no mistake, news that Britain's economy grew by 1% in the third quarter of 2012 does not mark the end of the downturn that began more than five years ago, even though it is tremendous morale booster for a government that has had its back to the wall in recent months.'

Britian's First World War 100th Anniverasry

'In 2014, how will Britain commemorate the greatest mistake of the 20th century, the butcher's bill of 1914-18, the slaughter of 743,000 Britons and a further 192,000 from the empire, all due to a squabble for power and influence in the Balkans?
David Cameron, in a heartfelt speech at London's Imperial War Museum, standing in front of Paul Nash's The Menin Road, provided an answer on Thursday.
He revealed that £50m would be set aside for the centenary of the first world war, with national commemorations on specific anniversaries such as the outbreak of war, Armistice Day and major battles. There will be an upgrade to the Imperial War Museum by 2014 and funds to help secondary schools explore the Great War and its vast consequences.'

David Cameron today set out the Government’s plans to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War (WW1) in 2014.
These plans include a £35 million refurbishment of the WW1 galleries at the Imperial War Museum London (IWM); a project made possible due to an extra £5 million from the Treasury announced today. This additional money will be paid for from fines imposed on financial services firms for misconduct.
And Culture Secretary Maria Miller will chair an expert advisory panel to oversee the programme and ensure that the centenary plans are delivered.
Speaking at the IWM, an institution founded in 1917 to record the then still-continuing conflict, Mr Cameron said that he wanted to build a truly national commemoration, worthy of this historic centenary.
The Government’s principal partners in the commemorations will be the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the IWM, but will encompass support for a multitude of other initiatives, large and small, as they come together in the months and years to come.

 £50m commitment:
The Prime Minister said:
“In total, over £50 million is being committed to these centenary commemorations, and it is absolutely right that these commemorations should be given such priority. As a twenty year old soldier wrote just a week before he died ‘But for this war I and all the others would have passed into oblivion like the countless myriads before us . . . but we shall live for ever in the results of our efforts’.

BBC Plans to mark WWI's 100th anniversary

'It was known as the war "to end all wars". And though sadly there have been many conflicts since the First World War, its memory still looms large in British culture.
2014 marks the centenary of its outbreak. The Prime Minister, David Cameron, is setting out plans for commemorating that 100th anniversary.'

WW1 Anniversary 2014

'In August 2014 the world will mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Why should we remember? Why should we stop and think about those events that happened so long ago?'

'The crucible of war also proved very creative. Aircraft developed quickly, taking death and destruction into the sky. New ways of fighting made better and more effective use of huge quantities of shells and bullets manufactured on a scale never seen before.'

"I felt that I didn’t want to live, I’d no wish to live at all, because the world had come to an end, then, for me, because I’d lost all that I’d loved."
Kitty Morter remembering the birth of her baby after her husband had died on the Somme

Events 2014- WW1 Anniversary

-I found it; 2014 is the Hundredth Anniversary of the First World War. (Laura)

World War 1 – 100 years on

‘Four years is not a long time – but in four years a boy in his early teens grows into a young man and in four years the generation of British and Commonwealth lads born in the mid 1890s would come of age and go to war.  In 1914 they went to The Great War, the War to End All Wars – and many never came home.
You may not know their names – but you can find them easily.  From the biggest city to the smallest hamlet they are on memorials – some are simple plaques others grander affairs – and if you cross to France and Belgium and further afield you will see the names on the white headstones ranged like soldiers on parade in cemeteries on the old battlefields.
2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of what we now sadly know as The First World War – it would never be The War to End All Wars.  As we look back over the century we should remember that these men did not die in vain – they fought a war that, like the one that followed only 25 years later, was necessary to contain the territorial ambition of a major European power.  About one hundred years before the outbreak of the First World War British and Allied troops had defeated France at the Belgium village of Waterloo – and contained a major European power.
Remember the courage and honour the sacrifice of the boys who became men 100 years ago and support the young men and women who have followed in their footsteps and are today’s soldiers.’

'World could be plunged into crisis in 2014': Cambridge expert predicts 'a great event' will determine course of the century

By Daily Mail Reporter

'A 'Doomsday' moment will take place in 2014 - and will determine whether the 21st century is full of violence and poverty or will be peaceful and prosperous, according to a Cambridge University professor.
In the last 500 years there has been a cataclysmic 'Great Event' of international significance at the start of each century, he claims.
Occurring in the middle of the second decade of each century, they include events which sparked wars, religious conflict and brought peace.
Great Event: The movie 2012 (pictured) suggested there would be massive world disaster that year. But Professor Boyle claims it will be 2014 when there is a huge world event

  • In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door of Wittenburg church, sparking the Reformation of the church and rise of Protestantism.
  • 1618 marked the start of the 30 Years War and decades of religious conflict in Western Europe
  • That conflict ended with the establishment of the Hanoverians in 1715. They ruled over Great Britain and Ireland, and Hanover (in Germany).
  • The enlightened Congress of Vienna took place in 1815, following the defeat of Napoleon, and heralded a century of relative stability across Europe.
  • In 1914 the First World War broke out, a catastrophic conflict that would claim millions of lives and set the tone for international discord throughout the 21st century.

-Now this sounds more like it; a crisis has a big impact of influences trends- mood, colour images etc. Last 'Dooms Day' was a hundred years ago at the start of the first world war; this is something to look into further. (Laura)

Health and safety ‘super event’ planned by IOSH and UBM in 2014

The two biggest events in the health and safety calendar are to join forces next year, offering practitioners and product and service providers myriad opportunities to learn, network and inform.

UBM Live, organiser of Safety & Health Expo – Europe’s biggest annual health and safety exhibition – and IOSH have announced today (12 February) that in 2014 the currently NEC-based event will take place alongside the Institution’s flagship annual conference at London ExCeL from 17 to 19 June.

'The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, will be celebrated from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi,[2] Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. Ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports will be held. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC).
Sochi was selected as the host city on 4 July 2007 during the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City,[3] defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria; and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Sochi Olympics are the first Winter Olympics (and first Olympics altogether) for the Russian Federation, as the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were in the Soviet Union.
Construction in preparation for the Games involves the building of new venues; and modernizing the telecommunications, power, and transport infrastructure of the area. This will include the construction of a new Olympic Park by the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley, with venues clustered around a central area. The venues in Krasnaya Polyana will also be new.'
