WW1 Anniversary 2014

'In August 2014 the world will mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Why should we remember? Why should we stop and think about those events that happened so long ago?'

'The crucible of war also proved very creative. Aircraft developed quickly, taking death and destruction into the sky. New ways of fighting made better and more effective use of huge quantities of shells and bullets manufactured on a scale never seen before.'

"I felt that I didn’t want to live, I’d no wish to live at all, because the world had come to an end, then, for me, because I’d lost all that I’d loved."
Kitty Morter remembering the birth of her baby after her husband had died on the Somme

Events 2014- WW1 Anniversary

-I found it; 2014 is the Hundredth Anniversary of the First World War. (Laura)

World War 1 – 100 years on

‘Four years is not a long time – but in four years a boy in his early teens grows into a young man and in four years the generation of British and Commonwealth lads born in the mid 1890s would come of age and go to war.  In 1914 they went to The Great War, the War to End All Wars – and many never came home.
You may not know their names – but you can find them easily.  From the biggest city to the smallest hamlet they are on memorials – some are simple plaques others grander affairs – and if you cross to France and Belgium and further afield you will see the names on the white headstones ranged like soldiers on parade in cemeteries on the old battlefields.
2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of what we now sadly know as The First World War – it would never be The War to End All Wars.  As we look back over the century we should remember that these men did not die in vain – they fought a war that, like the one that followed only 25 years later, was necessary to contain the territorial ambition of a major European power.  About one hundred years before the outbreak of the First World War British and Allied troops had defeated France at the Belgium village of Waterloo – and contained a major European power.
Remember the courage and honour the sacrifice of the boys who became men 100 years ago and support the young men and women who have followed in their footsteps and are today’s soldiers.’

'World could be plunged into crisis in 2014': Cambridge expert predicts 'a great event' will determine course of the century

By Daily Mail Reporter

'A 'Doomsday' moment will take place in 2014 - and will determine whether the 21st century is full of violence and poverty or will be peaceful and prosperous, according to a Cambridge University professor.
In the last 500 years there has been a cataclysmic 'Great Event' of international significance at the start of each century, he claims.
Occurring in the middle of the second decade of each century, they include events which sparked wars, religious conflict and brought peace.
Great Event: The movie 2012 (pictured) suggested there would be massive world disaster that year. But Professor Boyle claims it will be 2014 when there is a huge world event

  • In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door of Wittenburg church, sparking the Reformation of the church and rise of Protestantism.
  • 1618 marked the start of the 30 Years War and decades of religious conflict in Western Europe
  • That conflict ended with the establishment of the Hanoverians in 1715. They ruled over Great Britain and Ireland, and Hanover (in Germany).
  • The enlightened Congress of Vienna took place in 1815, following the defeat of Napoleon, and heralded a century of relative stability across Europe.
  • In 1914 the First World War broke out, a catastrophic conflict that would claim millions of lives and set the tone for international discord throughout the 21st century.

  • Cataclysmic events: The 'Doomsday' of the last century was in 1914, when the First World War began

-Now this sounds more like it; a crisis has a big impact of influences trends- mood, colour images etc. Last 'Dooms Day' was a hundred years ago at the start of the first world war; this is something to look into further. (Laura)

Health and safety ‘super event’ planned by IOSH and UBM in 2014

The two biggest events in the health and safety calendar are to join forces next year, offering practitioners and product and service providers myriad opportunities to learn, network and inform.

UBM Live, organiser of Safety & Health Expo – Europe’s biggest annual health and safety exhibition – and IOSH have announced today (12 February) that in 2014 the currently NEC-based event will take place alongside the Institution’s flagship annual conference at London ExCeL from 17 to 19 June.

'The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, will be celebrated from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi,[2] Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. Ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports will be held. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC).
Sochi was selected as the host city on 4 July 2007 during the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City,[3] defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria; and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Sochi Olympics are the first Winter Olympics (and first Olympics altogether) for the Russian Federation, as the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were in the Soviet Union.
Construction in preparation for the Games involves the building of new venues; and modernizing the telecommunications, power, and transport infrastructure of the area. This will include the construction of a new Olympic Park by the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley, with venues clustered around a central area. The venues in Krasnaya Polyana will also be new.'
